Botany

Botany

Here we explore ways in which the science of botany relates to the production of plants specificially intended for human consumption. We focus on how humans attempt to manipulate plant ecology, physiology, and genetics in order to create food crops that have qualities that humans need and desire, such as better flavor, longer shelf-life, the lack of seeds, greater resistence to pests, disease, and decay. We are also interested in how science studies the possibility of producing plants that can thrive in ever shrinking amounts of space for growing. In these ways, botany figures in to transitional regionalized environments, localized habitats, and perhaps even the gradual (or abrupt) emergence into less favorable geological conditions, such as a coming ice age.
